It’s that time of year again. Each year as winter melts into spring at least one of my three children will develop a cough. Not just any cough, the kind that keeps them up through the night. The thick liquid cough remedies of our childhood are no longer recommended so I’ve polled friends and experts for their go-to cough remedies.

As always, check with your medical professional before trying any of these.

1. Tea Tree Oil

This one works for me like a charm. Before the kids go to sleep, I’ll rub 2-3 drops of tea tree oil on the soles of their feet. Essential oils can be quite strong so you may want to use a carrier oil such as olive oil. I wouldn’t use an essential oil such as tea tree on a child under three. After I rub in the oil, I place socks on their feet.

2. Mānuka Honey

Mānuka honey hails from New Zealand and Australia. It can be found at health food stores and is known for its antibacterial properties. Many people take it every day for general good health but I give it to coughing kids by the teaspoonful or dissolved in warm water with lemon.

3. Probiotics

As recent study in the Canadian Medical Association Journal found that probiotics (along with regular hand-washing) helped prevent upper respiratory tract infections in children and adults better than vitamin C.

4. Elderberry Extract

Elderberry has been used for centuries to fight inflammation. I give my older kids a natural liquid cough & cold remedy with elderberry extract. Some parents even make their own.

5. Rest & Good Food

Most coughs will eventually taper out on their own. I try to make sure my littles go to bed early when they aren’t feeling well. Our bodies are pretty amazing when it comes to self-healing. I’ll also whip up a batch of chicken soup with carrots and celery to warm up their tummies.

Do you have any cough and cold remedies to share?

Thyme tea, a friend suggest this when my daughter had bronchitis, it worked so well we didn't need to use the nasty syrup the dr had given us. The kids ask for it even when they aren't sick.
